The reconstruction of the two rinks arena of Val-Bélair is part of the City of Québec’s plan to comply with the government’s new environmental requirements by the deadline set in 2020. The Val-Bélair Arena had not undergone any major renovations since its construction in the 1980s. In order to meet greenhouse gas emission standards, the Freon refrigeration system was changed. This work required the destruction and reconstruction of the two rinks and the bands and benches of the players. Other works include, but is not limited to, retrofitting and upgrading electrical and mechanical building systems, installing a drainage system under the new rinks, replacing the entire pit for collecting accumulated snow by the resurfacer as well as the construction and modification of mezzanines to support mechanical and refrigeration equipment.
